Can your pregnancy scan give the wrong due date?
A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.

However, to tell the sex accurately, it is best to wait until between 16 to 20 weeks. However, in a study published by Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy , researchers studied sonograms from women who were all under 14 weeks pregnant.
They repeated the study when they were in the second trimester between weeks 18 and 24, when the sex can be determined by ultrasound. By this point, only women still met their study criteria, and were having girls, and were having boys.
3.4 18-22 Week Detailed Morphology Scan
It is common to be given a single ‘estimated due date’ EDD which corresponds the point at which it is estimated that your pregnancy will have lasted 40 weeks. It may be more helpful to be prepared for you baby arrive some time after 37 weeks, and to focus on 42 weeks as the time by which you have a good chance of having given birth.
